Dremel Resources

What I have learned using a Dremel

tool as a tool post grinder in my lathe

  • Always cover your ways when grinding! Wheel abrasive can destroy a good lathe.

  • Rigidity as with any machining process is very important.

  • Use the largest shank wheel that you can (as far as I know this is going to be 1/8”).

  • Chuck your wheel up as short as possible. I cut some of my wheel shanks off so they can be chucked up shorter.

  • Dress your wheel for a sharp true surface preferably with a single point diamond dresser. A piece of an old wheel can be used.

  • Take light cuts. You can’t wheel .002” off a 2” diameter. You are limited by both hp and rigidity.

  • Make sure your Dremel tool is in good shape. A common source of trouble is the front spindle bearing going bad or becoming loose in the plastic housing. The bearings can be replaced cheaply enough if necessary. If your bearing is loose in the plastic housing, which is common, you can shim them with shim stock, shrink wrap, or even pieces of a pop can. Anything to get the bearing tight in the housing.

  • Patience is a virtue in this game. Take your time and excellent results are achievable.

I would like to expand on this as a resource for everyone. If you have good tips, ideas, or links please share them through my contact email (Kevin@KoosMachine.com) so I can continue to add.
